SEGRON Automated Testing takes VoNR

The ever-evolving landscape of telecommunications is marked by the relentless pursuit of perfecting and deploying advanced technologies, a defining characteristic within which SEGRON stands out. With its Automated Testing Framework, SEGRON sets new standards and maintains a steadfast commitment to staying ahead of the curve.
In a recent milestone, the correct functioning and implementation of Voice over New Radio (VoNR) were validated using our innovative automated testing approach within a Customer Lab Environment.

This involved employing out-of-the-box smartphones in combination with our Layer-3 Tracing function. This article delves into how SEGRON’s automated testing plays a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless integration and flawless performance of VoNR in lab testing environments.

General:
Voice over New Radio (VoNR) is a crucial component of 5G technology, promising unparalleled efficiency and quality in voice communication capabilities. As SEGRON strives to lead in technological advancements, VoNR emerges as a key focus area, demanding rigorous testing to ensure its successful integration into communication networks:

  • Interoperability Challenges Addressed: Implementing VoNR presents significant challenges in achieving interoperability with diverse devices and network elements. SEGRON’s automated testing solutions enable comprehensive testing of VoNR across a spectrum of devices, ensuring seamless interoperability within the intricate 5G ecosystem. Our powerful Layer-3 Trace analysis function meticulously examines necessary interfaces.
  • Ensuring Quality of Service (QoS): The success of VoNR hinges on delivering an unparalleled quality of service for voice calls over 5G networks. SEGRON’s testing tools empower service providers to evaluate VoNR under diverse conditions, ensuring consistent high standards for voice quality and reliability.
  • Streamlining Verification Processes: Automated testing, facilitated by SEGRON, streamlines and accelerates the verification processes crucial for VoNR integration. Through meticulously crafted test scenarios, our tools simulate real-world conditions, allowing service providers to assess performance, reliability, and interoperability of VoNR across various devices and network configurations.

Testing Setup & Scenarios: The adoption of 5G Voice over New Radio (VoNR) represents the future for many operators. To achieve this, 3GPP standards define that the 5G network must provide voice services using 5G NR, 5G Core, and IMS. This article takes a deeper look into the testing setup and scenarios, outlining the milestones for establishing a VoNR call.

Voice over NR Call Setup in High Level:

To establish a VoNR call, there are five critical call setup milestones:

1. UE detects a 5G NR Cell and starts 5G Registration to 5G NR(gNB) and 5GC.

2. The ims PDU is established to DNN “ims” with non-GBR QoS Flow and 5QI=5. (Data Network Name (DNN) is equal to APN in 4G LTE)

3. The data PDU is established to DNN “internet” with non-GBR QoS Flow and 5QI=6-9. IMS and Data PDU sessions (steps 2 & 3) can be established in reverse order.

4. UE does the registration process with IMS using SIP over the IMS PDU Session. VoNR call flow closely resembles VoLTE call flow.

5. UE creates a dedicated PDU Session (using GBR QoS Flow and 5QI=1) applicable for MO and MT VoNR call directions.

Example: Deep Packet Inspection for verifying Voice over NR Call setup procedure using SEGRON’s Layer-3 Trace Analysis Method

Voice over NR call setup is a procedure across multiple network domains – 5G RAN, 5G Core, and IMS. There are defined UE and network-related criteria to meet for establishing a VoNR call. For instance, even though UE is registered to 5G RAN and 5G Core successfully, some network-related events may force the gNB to perform EPS-Fallback. Hence, SEGRON introduces Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) principles to verify the accuracy of five key messages essential for Voice over NR establishment. This ensures proper verification that the call was established via 5G VoNR and not fallen back to EPS during call setup due to a lack of NR resources or any other 5G cell restrictions.

User Friendly Reporting Interface:

Our well-designed reporting interface incorporates all needed information to transform complex data into easily understandable insights. Based on that, the correctness of all the above-mentioned message flows can be seen at a glance in the clearly structured test report:
