Watch the Recording: Inside Our eSIM Webinar with Redtea Mobile
- Reading Time: 3 minutes
On 24 September, SEGRON joined Redtea Mobile and MVNO Nation for a live webinar, “The Hidden Challenge of eSIM” — a look at why successful activation and reliable, ongoing connectivity are two very different things, and what MVNOs and MNOs need to get right to close that gap.
If you missed it, the link to a full recording is below. Here are the moments worth knowing about first.

What we covered
- Replicate, don’t emulate Stephen Ornadel (SEGRON) opened by naming an industry open secret: most “eSIM testing” today is really physical-SIM testing in disguise — credentials burned onto plastic cards and shipped around the world in multiplexers, never touching a real SM-DP+ server, a real LPA, or a real eUICC. SEGRON’s approach is different: load your eSIM credentials once into our credential database, then validate a real, remote activation on a real, out-of-the-box smartphone anywhere we have devices — currently 110+ countries, with China now live. A newly created profile can be validated within two minutes of being issued.
"We are no longer emulating eSIM profile management. We are actually doing the real thing. Replicate, not emulate."
Stephen Ornadel, SEGRON
- A real operator story: throttling caught in the act Vincent Wang (Redtea Mobile) shared a concrete example of why continuous testing matters: routine quality monitoring uncovered a roaming partner quietly throttling traffic during peak hours in one market. Redtea Mobile brought the evidence to the operator, and the restriction was lifted — a problem that would never have surfaced without real, ongoing validation.
- Automotive eSIM: zero tolerance for failure For Redtea Mobile’s automotive and IoT business — now deployed across more than 20 Chinese automotive OEMs — the stakes are even higher. Vincent described validating SIM configurations for vehicles built in China and shipped to markets like Argentina before they ever leave the factory, spot-checking entire batches in minutes, not days, because a car that arrives and can’t connect is a compensation-level failure, not a minor inconvenience.
- From first meeting to production in under seven months Stephen and Vincent walked through the timeline of the SEGRON–Redtea Mobile partnership: a first conversation at WAS in Rome last October, contract signed by January, and the platform live and in production by May — ahead of an already ambitious target. A nice proof point for what a small, focused partner can deliver.
- The panel: “Activation is just the entry point” Jason Olivieri (Verizon) set the tone for the panel discussion that followed, with four voices spanning MNOs, MVNEs and travel eSIM: activation success tells you almost nothing about whether the customer actually gets a working service.
- Matas Čenys (Saily) described how simply explaining onboarding steps more clearly halved activation setup times for customers. Michael Nelson (Telenor Linx) argued that quality expectations depend entirely on who your customer is — a backpacker and a corporate traveller define “good enough” very differently. And Xiaodong Guo (Redtea Mobile) explained why IoT and automotive devices need to be treated as a genuinely different testing problem from consumer smartphones, particularly around permanent roaming.
"It's a happy challenge — it moves the industry forward towards a more seamless connectivity vision, which we share globally."
Xiaodong Guo, Redtea Mobile
So, is the physical SIM dying? The panel’s closing question split opinion nicely: predictions ranged from “two to three years” (Michael Nelson, tied to device replacement cycles) to Xiaodong Guo’s view that physical SIM “will not disappear in my lifetime,” just fade slowly as eSIM adoption grows around it.

We’ve only scratched the surface here — the complete session covers a lot more, including the full live audience Q&A. And if you’d like to keep the conversation going in person, SEGRON will be at MVNO Nation Europe in Alicante, 3–5 November. Read more about our plans for Alicante here.
